Utale Community Day Secondary School Girls hostel, in Balaka, was built over a decade ago. The contractor refuses to hand over the hostel unless government settles his balance. The school currently has 189 girls and almost all of them are self-boarding. The hostel, that is now dilapidating, has capacity to accommodate 224 girls. CSE committed to support and help the girls and the school to access this hostel. CSE (sponsored by NCP) constructed a small hostel to accommodate and rescue the most vulnerable girls while lobbying for the bigger hostel to be handed over to the school. CSE with the Balaka CSO Network facilitated a stakeholder engagement meeting at Balaka District Council. The meeting brought together all parties involved in one room to discuss all issues and find a way forward. Dialogue and a multi stakeholder approach is key in this matter. This matter is still in progress and requiring a lot of support.
